Diversity and Inclusion for Employers

Workplace culture starts with you. Think about how you behave towards others and set the tone for positive and respectful relationships.

Make it clear that your workplace has a zero-tolerance stance towards discrimination, bullying and harassment with well-defined policies. Make sure all apprentices and employees are aware of your policies and know the consequences for breaching them. Address any complaints quickly, sensitively, and effectively.

It might seem like a small thing, but words make all the difference. Avoid terms like “blokes”, “men”, or even “guys”, and replace them with more inclusive terms like “team”, “folks”, “people” or “crew”. Respect team members’ pronouns and consistently use them in all interactions. Avoid assuming, even if you’ve always done so in the past. Try asking respectfully and start new habits for yourself and your team.

Understand that some apprentices may have cultural or religious obligations, such as time for prayer or time off to attend community or family events such as funerals. Recognise that these are important and need to be accommodated. Have an open conversation and ask apprentices how you can support them if you’re unsure of what to do.

Encourage all staff to participate in workplace training to improve their understanding and communication skills. This can benefit their relationships with each other, and also with your customer base.

Jokes should never vilify, degrade, or insult people. If someone’s comments are intended to harm someone, they can be considered harassment.
