Mainstream apprenticeships and traineeships

Taking up an apprenticeship or traineeship is a great way to start (or restart) you career. Choose from different certificate levels in more than 500 occupations, from floristry to plumbing to financial services – including traditional trades and new careers across business and industry.

Apprenticeships and traineeships combine valuable on-the-job training with vocational study at a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) – usually a Victorian TAFE institute.

You also get to earn an income while you learn, making study more achievable for a whole lot of people.

Apprentices and trainees end up with a qualification that’s nationally recognised, with up-to-the-minute skills that employers want and need, plus heaps of valuable real-world experience. Then you choose what comes next: find skilled employment, continue your studies, or even start your own business.

Apprenticeships and traineeships can be full-time or part-time, and they’re open to anyone of working age.

Where can an apprenticeship or traineeship take you?

Apprenticeships and traineeships can get you started in hundreds of different careers, with a huge variety of workplaces and job types on offer. Your role might be indoors or outdoors; desk-based or on the move; working with your hands or with technology. You can spend your time caring, leading, creating, building, making or managing. It’s your choice.

Apprenticeships mostly provide training in a skilled trade.

For example, as an apprentice, you could work towards a career as an electrician, baker, carpenter, landscape gardener, signwriter, hairdresser, butcher, upholsterer or cabinetmaker.

Traineeships mostly provide training in a vocational area.

For example, as a trainee, you could work towards a career as a dental assistant, computer technician, medical receptionist, paralegal, beauty therapist, disability or aged care support worker, marketing assistant, animal carer or agricultural worker.
